| Ms.
Songer has had her tiny service dog, Wheeler, for the past 8 years. Wheeler
is a remarkable Papillon and Chihuahua crossed dog. Wheeler weighs 5 pounds and fits in Ms. Songer's pocketbook. She rides there mainly for convenience and also for safety because of her small size. When Wheeler grew to the age of 6 months she began acting very different at times when Ms. Songer was about to have a seizure. Despite Wheelers tiny size she has become Ms. Songer's closest friend and hasn't missed alerting Ms. Songer to any seizures in 8 years. Miracles do come in tiny packages. |
Wheeler
became part of the Songer family after her son, then 11 years old, was
bitten by a friends family dog. Her son became scared of dogs and Ms Songer,
wanting to help her son eliminate his fear, took him to the city pound.
There he picked out a pet for the family. The dog her son chose, was a 10
pound Chihuahua. She unknowing to her new family was pregnant. When Ms.
Songer and her son discovered their new dog was pregnant. Ms. Songer and her
son made arrangements for the puppies to be born. This is where Wheeler came
on the scene. Ms Songer soon fell in love with this tiny puppy and a fast
friendship grew. *Because of Wheelers small size Ms. Songer is stopped constantly and questioned about having the dog in restraints and business. Wheeler wears a service dog's vest but most people are so ignorant that instead of realizing that she is a service dog. Most people assume that she is a pet that is being smuggled in. This has now caused Ms Songer to search out the aid of a new service dog. Alexandra is a Bernese Mountain dog. She is extremely smart and quite talented. Because of her size alone, she is able to help Ms. Songer in many more ways then Wheeler ever could. But the love that Wheeler and Ms. Songer share will never be replaced. Alex can help Ms. Songer by pushing her shopping cart, picking up her dropped keys or other objects. And she is able to help Ms. Songer with the seizures. |
In 1985 Ms. Songer was involved in an
automobile accident. She had been hit by a drunk driver and sustained
life altering brain damage. She began having seizures. |
